Soft X-ray spectroscopy of clusters, surfaces and interfaces

Fast switching high magnetic field chamber for XMCD

This chamber was designed as an endstation for our groups’ ICARUS cluster source (Ionic Clusters by Argon sputtering). It provides the possibility to perform XAS and XMCD investigations on ultrasmall, mass selected, adsorbates on non-magnetic surfaces.
Besides the adsorbed cluster investigations, the fast switching high field chamber can be used to perform XMCD measurements on a wide variety of sample systems, either prepared ex situ or in situ via the standard surface science methods (sputtering, gas inlet systems, metal evaporators, etc.). The cryogen free, closed cycle magnet cooling system (provided by Cryogenic Limited) enables magnetic fields collinear to the photon beam of up to ±7 T with a full field reversal time under two minutes.
The soft-x-ray beamline P04 of the PETRA III synchrotron facility is the common site of operation.
